Tape extension installation

How to apply tape-in extensions: thin sections, a full press, and 24 hours before the first wash.

Start here

What happens at this stage

Installation is where the next eight weeks are decided. A sandwich is two tabs and a thin panel of natural hair, and how that panel is chosen: how thick it is, how clean it is, how far off the scalp the tab sits, determines whether the install holds quietly until the move-up or starts slipping in the second week.

Very little of it is about the adhesive. Tape that will hold for two months holds for two months on hair that was clean, dry and sectioned properly. The same tape on a root with conditioner on it slips, and the slip gets reported as weak tape.

The three judgements that matter

Panel thickness. The section between the tabs should be thin enough to see light through. Thicker than that and the two tabs never meet each other, so the bond is holding tab-to-hair on one face instead of tab-to-tab through it. This is the most common cause of slipping and the hardest to spot after the fact.

Distance from the scalp. About a finger's width. Closer and every brush stroke pulls on the follicle, which is how traction starts. Further out and the weft shows the moment the hair parts.

Weight against the hair that carries it. Fine hair takes fewer and lighter wefts, not the same install done more carefully. A stylist who declines a full head on fine hair is doing the job right, and that conversation belongs at the consultation rather than at the move-up when the damage is already visible.

Prep is most of the work

Clean, dry, product-free hair. No conditioner at the roots, no oil, no leave-in, no dry shampoo anywhere near where a tab is going. Adhesive bonds to hair, not to the film on it, and nothing you do later in the install compensates for skipping this.

Then the sandwich itself: lower tab under the panel, weft flat and square on top, upper tab closing it with the edges aligned, and a firm press along the whole tab with an application tool. Fingers are not a press. Pressing is what turns contact into a bond.

The 24 hours afterwards

No washing, no swimming, no hard workout, no sauna. The adhesive is still setting, and this is the rule that gets broken most often because the hair looks finished the moment the client leaves the chair. An install that slips in week one almost always traces back to this day rather than to anything that happened during the appointment.

Re-tabbing hair you already own

Wefts come off with spent tape on them, and that tape is single-use. Strip it, clean the seam, press on a fresh tab. This is also how hair bought from another brand joins the system: the wefts are yours, the tabs are ours. Sixty tabs is thirty sandwiches, which covers one full-head move-up for most installs.

Next in the cycle

A set of tape-ins goes in, gets worn, comes down and goes back up. This is the stage that follows installation.

  1. Next Aftercare Washing, sleeping and swimming without walking the bond down.
  2. Then Removal Mist both sides, wait, lift, then re-tab in the same appointment.
  3. All of it Tape-in extensions, explained The pillar: what they are, how long they last, what goes wrong.
