OpenWhat happens at this stage
Aftercare is the longest stage and the only one the client runs alone. Six to eight weeks of washing, sleeping, swimming and styling sit between the install and the move-up, and how those weeks go decides whether the take-out is a routine appointment or a repair job.
It is also the cheapest stage to get right. Nothing on this page requires buying a product. It is four habits, and they carry almost all of the outcome.
The four that matter
Nothing oily at the bond. Hair oils, heavy leave-ins, oil-based serums and most scalp treatments break an adhesive bond down from the edge inward. Conditioner belongs from mid-length down and nowhere else. This is the one rule with no exceptions.
Wash when the scalp needs it. Stretching washes to a schedule leaves oil sitting at the tape, which is worse for the install than an extra wash ever was. Shampoo at the scalp with the hair hanging straight, not piled on top of the head.
Dry the bond. A weft left wet at the tape mats, and matting at the bond line is not brushed out. It is cut out. Rough-dry the roots before doing anything else.
Sleep loose and dry. A loose braid or a silk scrunchie, on dry hair. The combination that causes trouble is wet hair, friction and tension in the same night.
Swimming, sweat and heat
Swim, then rinse. Chlorine and salt are not the problem; sitting in them for hours is. The same applies at the gym, sweat at the nape is normal, a soaked bond still unwashed twelve hours later is not. Anyone in the water several times a week should say so at the consultation, because it changes where tabs go and how many the install can carry.
Heat is fine on the lengths and not on the tab. Adhesive softens under an iron, and softened adhesive slides.
What aftercare cannot do
It can't extend the cycle. Six to eight weeks is a limit set by how fast your own hair grows, not by how well the install has been treated, the tab does not move down the shaft with the hair, so tension and matting arrive on schedule regardless. What good aftercare buys is hair in good enough condition to be worth re-tabbing when that day comes.
If tabs start slipping inside three weeks with none of the four habits broken, the problem is the install or the adhesive rather than the maintenance, and it is worth a check rather than a wait.

A set of tape-ins goes in, gets worn, comes down and goes back up. This is the stage that follows aftercare.
