Tape-in extensions have three costs: the hair, the install labour, and the consumables that recur every six to eight weeks. Most people budget for the first two and discover the third in week seven. Over a year the recurring side is usually the larger number.
The honest answer to what tape-ins cost is that it depends on three separate things, only one of which we sell. Lumping them into a single figure is how people end up feeling misled.
So here they are separately, with real arithmetic where we've it and named variables where we do not.
The three costs
| Cost | When | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| The hair, meaning the wefts | Up front, reused across several cycles | A hair supplier. Not us |
| Install labour | Every install and every move-up | The stylist. Not us |
| Consumables: tabs and remover | Every move-up, so roughly 7 to 8 times a year | Us, and we publish it below |
The wefts are the part people research hardest and the part that lasts longest. Good hair goes through several cycles. The adhesive never does, which is what makes the third row recurring, and it's the single biggest thing people miss when they decide to start.
The consumable arithmetic, in full
| Figure | Working | |
|---|---|---|
| Tabs | $45 a pack | 60 tabs, so 30 sandwiches |
| Per sandwich | $1.50 | 45 divided by 30 |
| Packs per move-up | 1 to 2 | Density decides this |
| Move-ups a year | Roughly 7 to 8 | A 6 to 8 week interval |
| Remover | $25 a bottle | 4.0 oz, about 30 removals |
| Per removal | About $0.83 | 25 divided by roughly 30 |
The 30-removal figure is a working estimate from a bottle lasting about a month in one salon, not a controlled count.
Run your own density through that and you get a real annual consumable figure rather than a guess. Fine hair at one pack a move-up sits at the bottom of the range. Thick hair at two packs sits at the top. To count your own head first, see how many tape-ins you need.
What moves the labour cost
- Region. The same appointment is priced very differently in different markets, which is why a single national figure is meaningless.
- How long the removal takes, which is mostly decided by how cleanly the bonds release. A removal that needs a clarifying wash first is a longer appointment.
- Density, because more sandwiches is more time.
- Whether a cut and blend is included, which it should be, and which is real work.
- Whether the stylist supplies the consumables or you bring them.
The second bullet is the one we have a stake in. An oil-free remover means no clarifying wash before re-tabbing, which is twenty to thirty minutes of a move-up appointment that simply does not happen.
Doing part of it yourself
Removal is the stage most people can take on, and it's the one most reliably saves money, because it is the part with the least skill in it and the most time. Installing at home is a bigger step and the nape is hard alone.
If you're going to do part of it, do the removal and keep the install professional, at least at first. That is the combination that saves real money without risking the result.
The numbers we do not have
We don't publish salon prices, because we do not set them and any range we quoted would be wrong somewhere. Ask two salons near you and you'll have better data than we could give you.
Hair is not something we sell, so the largest up-front number on this page is one we have no figure for.
Our removals-per-bottle estimate is experience rather than a measured count. A controlled count is something this brand should do and hasn't.

Questions we get asked
How much do tape-in extensions cost in total?
It splits into hair, labour and consumables. We can give you exact consumable arithmetic: $1.50 a sandwich for tabs and about $0.83 a removal. The other two vary by supplier and region.
What is the ongoing cost?
Consumables at every move-up, so roughly seven to eight times a year. One to two packs of tabs each time, plus the remover, plus whatever the stylist charges for the appointment.
Do I have to buy new hair every time?
No. Wefts are reusable across several cycles if they're looked after. The adhesive is the part that is replaced every time.
Can I reduce the cost?
Doing the removal yourself is the stage with the best ratio of money saved to risk taken. Installing at home saves more and is a bigger step, especially at the nape.
